I'm sure you all know by now that I am thrilled about the way the elections have turned out. Words can't describe the joy in my heart when I realized Barack Obama will be the next President of my country. Chills covered my body as CNN reporter David Gergen quoted Martin Luther King's last speech, given the day before he was killed: "Well, I don't know what will happen now. We've got some difficult days ahead. But it doesn't matter with me now. Because I've been to the mountaintop. And I don't mind. Like anybody, I would like to live a long life. Longevity has its place. But I'm not concerned about that now. I just want to do God's will. And He's allowed me to go up to the mountain. And I've looked over. And I've seen the promised land. I may not get there with you. But I want you to know tonight, that we, as a people, will get to the promised land. And I'm happy, tonight. I'm not worried about anything. I'm not fearing any man. Mine eyes have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord."
Tears filled the corner of my eyes as I thought of this great man, knowing his days were short, but knowing that one day his great country would elect a black man as their leader and representative. I do not doubt he saw this day. This promised land. And we all get to be a part of this. This great historical event, when America shocked the world. Because the world is watching.
I'm so grateful that Barack Obama is the symbol of my country. The representative of the change we want in our country.
I will never forget this night.

I thought of you last night as we were watching Obamba speech in Chicago. I am glad that you are so happy.
I am so happy you are happy because I thought both choices were a moo point. I still dont know what it was about obama that won over the country I think there are too many things about him that are unknown and shady! I realize we could debate this forever but....I just wish I would have had a third choice! :)

I just love ya! I was very inspired last night with the first african-american president being elected, but I just would have been happier if it was a black Mitt Romney or something:). I will say, just to make you smile, that I do think Barack Obama is very good looking and has a great smile. One good thing I could take away from this is that I can stare at a dreamy Pres. for the next 4 yrs. rather than a very old, stiff one. I wasn't totally crazy about ancient McCain, I just agreed with his policies more. We will see in 2012, the gloves will come off! Haha, you are great and I respect you immensley. Thanks for defending McCain even though it was only because he was a good loser:).

I am very proud to know that at least your votes in Virginia and Pennsylvania counted! Some Bassetts live in states that know what's best for their country!
Unfortunately I only voted for two people who won: Lee Tippetts, our unopposed School Board Member, and Bart Whatcott, a Republican County Commissioner. No Democrat opposed him (like a Democrat has a chance in Millard County) and he was running against a right right right wing John Bircher, so I decided I'd best cast my ballot for the lesser of the two evils.
Sandy District did vote out the dishonest Republican Speaker of the House however; but West Jordan voted the fowl mouthed Eagle Forum darling Chris Buttars back in for another four years. He's the one that referred to some controversial issue as "an ugly black baby." Sometimes it's a hard swallow living in Utah -- I just don't understand the mentality of the masses.
I did have to chuckle about an ad the Democratic Party ran featuring Mitt Romney. He was quoted as having lived in a state that was overwhelmingly ruled by one party (Utah) and it was not a good thing to have one party rule. With their control in D.C. I sure hope the Democrats on the national level don't become as unethical and arrogant as the Republican legislators of Utah. That would indeed be a very sad state of affairs.
Enough commentary. I love my spunky little Virginia Democrat.
