Missionary work + Church ball, English Teachers Rock, and more strange facts about The Office.

Missionary work is the greatest. Last year, our Church ball team was pretty horrific. We won once, maybe twice. I was pretty much the star player, enough said. So this year Katie decided to bring in some recruits. She met Karen at the gym and noticed she was an amazing b-baller. So she invited her to join our team. Karen loved the idea and even invited her friend Laura who also rocks at the game. So far this year our record is flawless. Karen gets us up by 20 points in the first 6 minutes and then she just lets us enjoy playing the rest of the game with ease. I love it!

I've reacquainted myself with some old High School English teachers and I've realized . . . I love English teachers. Miss B is amazing. She has helped me so much lately. She hooked me up with two guest speakers for my class this week. I'll let you know how that goes, gangster black kids meet old Japanese women . . .?

The woman I student taught for is a DOLL! I found her on facebook and have now started blog stalking her. She, like me, has a blog dedicated to all the books she reads. And she must read two or three a week. Her review of Breaking Dawn had me busting up. It was so funny. She actually said, twice . . . "it's not even a story because there is no conflict." Which I have to admit, is partially true. When I teach literary texts to my students the first thing I teach them is that all stories, long or short, must have a conflict.

And I love the English teachers I work with at Dunbar (most of them anyway). In fact, five of us are getting together tomorrow to plan out our semester. I can't wait. I'm hoping I'll have a missionary opportunity there, when I have to leave for Church. We'll see. I've invited them to go to the Temple visitor center, but I'm ready to branch out with some new stuff . . . like my testimony.

One last random fact about The Office crew. Actor Jon Krasinski (Jim) and actor/writer BJ Novak (Ryan) went to high school together. And the crazy part is, BJ wrote the school play one year and Jon was the main character. Go figure. But sadly, I have to say I've been a little disappointed in them both lately. Jim's character has become very flat and he doesn't seem to have much to do with Pam, his fiance, lately. And the overall quality of the show has just kind of gone down hill, partially BJ's fault. I hope they can recoupe. I blame it on the writers strike. Oh, and Angela was pregnant during season 4, didn't even notice.

I agree about the office. I was way disappointed with Thursday night! I don't even think I laughed much! (Of course you always laugh, but not like my usual office giggles.)

I'm excited to see how the Japanese women fair with your little gangstas... And, speaking of Breaking Dawn, Kathryn showed me this parody of one of the books that made cry I was laughing so hard! It validated my opinion of the book (ahem) but I think you'd get a kick out of it. Only problem: I can't remember where she found it. When I do, I'll let you know! :)

Bummer dude. I did a big long response, but it got lost in cyberspace somewhere. Maybe you weren't meant to receive it. Oh well.

I did want to say, "Good luck with the missionary work." Our church needs much more diversity. Maybe it's not bad in Virginia, but it's pretty pathetic in Utah.
Maybe I'm just ornery because of what happened in High Priest's Group a week ago. The men got carried away ragging on the Hispanics. I might not be quite the defender that your mother is, but I'm not far behind. After about three negative, nasty, mean-spirited comments, I mentioned that I recalled an area meeting that Pres. Jensen attended wherein the brethren were told that the Hispanics were coming to Utah for a reason, and it was our responsibility to share the gospel with them. No one commented, but it did allow the instructor to get back on track. I sensed some unkind thoughts toward my comment!
Yes, I believe the church needs diversity. Hopefully heaven won't just have white people in it! If so, I'm not interested. But then, I don't have to worry about that anyway, do I? Just my luck, hell will be all white!
Love, Pa
