On this day...

When I celebrate Utah's birth, I want to always remember to take time out of my busy schedule to thank MEXICO!!!

Here's the story: Back in the 1850s my ancestors were strongly persecuted in their home country (Denmark) and later their new country (The United States) for faithfully practicing the religion I know to be true. They left behind wealth, land, and family as a country (and relatives) that once provided for their prosperity shunned them for their decision to follow their hearts. They came looking for peace in a land built on the idea of "religious freedom." Ironically that peace was hard to come by as members of their faith were mobbed, rapped, and even killed. They were not able to raise a family in peace until they (completely undocumented) reached their final destination in a desert called MEXICO. Here, they were given a safe opportunity to try and prosper. As a result of the persecution they faced, their wealth had turned to complete poverty; but they gladly worked the clay-soiled land, lived in a mud hut, and loved one another more greatly then they ever thought possible.

May I (and any others who fit a similar story) always remember with gratitude the country (whatever it may have been at the time) that helped save our forefathers from any unjustified hostility or tyranny they faced in a land they once called home. Even better, may we always sympathize with those who still need the same opportunity to survive.
