1984

My mother made these little ginger bread men that decorated our family Christmas tree each year. We were each given one in 1984 (was that the year she made them, to be honest, I don't know). When I was younger our tree was sort of themed. There were always big red bows, these Gingerbread men, a homemade garland (links of Christmas fabric), and a couple other homemade ornaments I'm going to have to ask my mom about when she comes out to visit (the wreath shaped ones). I also remember making a popcorn garland (more than once) as a family.

I don't actually know the story behind all the homemade Christmas decorations that adorned our tree -- which is a shame. I'll have to investigate the matter when my folks come to visit this Holiday season. My memory tells me my mother was not into crafts and homemade decorations. But I now realize this may have been a hobby she simply put aside while raising us kids. Or maybe DIY projects is just a strange phase all mothers of young children go through? I'm not really sure.

Detective Liz will find out in a couple weeks!

Mother indeed made the ornaments and that particular year, you each received one of the gingerbread men because we were too poor to buy you fancy ones!!! You should have the story of your ornaments. I'll look it up and see if I can find it for you. Love, Pa
Let's aim for 12/13/14
